Sanyo SK-CV8S Digital Convection 6-Slice Toaster Oven
At exactly the the three-month mark since purchase, I have to report this is NOT a well-made unit. I'd had trouble with it over the last week, and determined yesterday that the cause was total failure of the lower heating elements. Doesn't matter if I get it repaired or replaced, or I don't. Nothing should fail so totally, so fast. I've retracted my earlier review and dropped this to One Star. My apologies to anyone who relied on this review and purchased this product. See below for all the Good Things I had to say about it and now regret publishing.
================================================================================
I've had this oven for six weeks now. When I purchased it, no one had reviewed it yet, so it was a minor gamble (a friend had an earlier Sanyo 4-slice convection toaster oven, and had nothing but good things to say about it.) In a solo household, there's little need for six or even four slices of toast, but I was looking more for oven replacement than toasting. Still, I like toast, and when you buy a "toaster oven", you know it's going to do some things well, and others not so well. Note: although the manufacturer notes the Temperature Selection ranges from 140°-500°, the only setting which allows for 500° is the Broil setting.
Toast: The Sanyo does best producing toast from thick, soft breads, turned once during toasting; for me, at least, this is a minor inconvenience. The best result was with Arnold's Cinnabon Bread. Rye bread comes out either hot and pale or light brown and totally crunchy; I find that English muffins need a quick broil after their initial toasting. Did I mention I like a nice brown on my toast and especially on English muffins? It does a pretty good job on toasting bagels, although again, if you're fond of brown, a quick top broil might be in order. Note: In no case did I toast more than two pieces of anything; your toasting experience may vary significantly from mine.
Baking: The Sanyo excels at this, with one minor "miss". So far, I've made 'from the can' biscuits (great results); 'from scratch' chocolate chip cookies (quite good, no burnt bottoms); frozen pizza (the built-in pizza mode does a very good job with that, and is also good for reheating pizzeria pie slices); baked potato (no need to turn it over); two-crust apple pie, which came out just fine, although I second-guessed the manufacturer's placement for baking and had to adjust to get the top to brown (note: Believe their placements); and finally, pound cake loaf. The pound cake loaf was the "miss". The cake certainly baked well enough, but due to the location of the heating elements, the side of the loaf facing the glass never got any color. If you can put up with a partly 'blonde' pound cake, no problem. I should mention that I used a Pyrex loaf pan, not metal. Better results might be obtained with a dark metal pan; or, perhaps I should have pushed the pan further back in the oven.
I haven't tried any casseroles, meat loaves, or chickens in it yet, and I haven't used the convection bake, but that will come next. Given the performance so far, I have no reason to expect any problems.
Pros: with six different positions for the baking rack, you have all the control you can want, and the baking pan and pizza pan are great in use. The pizza pan has a very slight lip, so it's also useful under fruit pies to catch any drips. Removing the crumb tray is simple and it is easy to clean, as is the inside of the oven. Yes, it gets hot, but not dangerously so (unless you have cats or small children around, in which case the usual cautions about stoves and ovens apply here.) Caution: Nothing should be stored or even placed directly on top of the oven, whether in use or not; the surface could be marred.
Cons: The broiling pan is quite flimsy and I doubt it will ever lay flat in use.
Bottom line: Read the manual (it's full of helpful details on rack placement and how to use the various features) and you'll have few if any problems with this unit.

Orka A65208 2-Piece Set Egg Poacher Review

I was very excited to order 2 of these because my daughter has just developed an interest in poached eggs...so much so that I order 2 for my husband and I. I tried them today. It was kind of hard to crack the egg into it because of the little 'handle' and then a lot of the egg drifted off in the boiling water. Clean up was not simple like I figured it might be...maybe we don't know the secret to making this work. Please share if you do.

Black & Decker CTO6301 Digital Advantage Stainless-Steel 6-Slice Convection Toaster Oven Review

Black and Decker CTO6301 Digital Advantage Stainless-Steel 6-Slice Convection Toaster Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After my horrible experiences with the Black & Decker TRO700S 4-Slice Toast-R-Oven, Stainless Steel, I swore I wouldn't buy another Black & Decker toaster oven. But when I was checking out several toaster ovens at Bed Bath & Beyond, low and behold there was this particular model available. Compared to the other models around, this one had the best combination of features and size for the price. The Krups convection oven felt cheaply made, unwarranted for the price. The other oven I considered, a Kitchen Aid convection oven, was very well made and looked great, except it did not have a convection feature and the elements were poorly exposed. I wanted to check out the Sanyo SK-VF7S Digital Convection Oven, Stainless Steel Finish that has been getting great reviews, but unfortunately this store didn't carry it. So, I decided to take a chance on "fool me thrice, shame on me". At least I could take it back to the local store if it didn't work out.
This Black & Decker oven is much better made than the TRO700S. It's also a bit bigger and has more solid feeling controls. It's also digital, so you don't have an annoying ticking sound while cooking. It also seems more robust than the Sanyo, potentially delivering more value for the money.
The Good: Excellent design, versatile tray system, non-stick inner surface, decent crumb guards over the heating elements, great capacity (it'll even accommodate a 12" pizza), wide viewing area, and even cooking. There are a lot of nice functions, including "bagel"--the bottom heats at half the top temperature, so it doesn't crisp the bottom of the bagel too much (nice). The exterior does get hot, like most toaster ovens, and its even worse with a brushed steel surface; however, the right side (where the convection fan is located) tends not to get scalding hot. The BROIL mode works well, despite not having the convection feature functioning. And although the toasting function takes long to work, it does brown the toast evenly.
The Not-so-good: The digital controls are confusing and take some time to figure out. The directions are OK, not great--but you definitely need to read them. The display does not have a clock, as one usually finds on digital appliances, but this is OK--once you realize it. The unit beeps at you when you select a cooking function, and it's rather loud. The convection feature only works in BAKE mode, not BROIL--I found this strange and disappointing. When you use it, there is no count-down indication of toasting progress (unlike with timed cooking/baking); you just have to trust that it will stop at the right time. Lastly, this product is designed more as an oven than a toaster--a single piece of toast takes about 50% longer to toast than in a conventional toaster. However, the workaround is to move the shelf to the upper position and then just flip the toast once it has browned on one side. Only a minor inconvenience. Also, there is no backlight to the LCD display, so if you're cooking at night in low light it's a little difficult to see the display details.
Overall, I give this unit a thumbs up... for now. I trust that since I didn't find any initial defects, it should operate well going forward. It is not a perfect oven, but then it seems NO company out there is bothering to perfect the convection/toaster oven. Sometimes I think I should go into product design, as I see so many flaws that can be easily avoided. Anyway, you won't go wrong getting this oven. :-)
NOTE: I really recommend seeing a toaster oven in person before buying it. This way you can get a sense of how it looks, feels, and operates. It's that tangible experience you just can't get on-line. Also, you can save more buying it in person (I paid $67 with tax, at BB&B with a 20% off coupon). However, if you aren't able to get to a store that has the appliances you're interested in, then you have to rely on what you see on-line. I hope my review helps you in your decision.

A useful addition to any busy kitchen, this convection toaster oven helps make mealtime a snap, whether keeping up with the everyday demands of an on-the-go family or cooking for a crowd during the holidays when additional cooking space comes in handy. Its user-friendly, push-button control panel and digital display help ensure easy programming. The oven's heat can be adjusted up to 450 degrees F, and its functions consist of toast, broil, bake, and convection bake (convection cooking helps food cook quickly and evenly with no hot spots). Use the appliance for anything from toasting up to six slices of bread at time to broiling a chicken or baking a casserole or pizza for dinner--its extra-deep curved interior makes it possible to accommodate larger size dishes and pies up to 12 inches. It also offers preset function buttons for automatically cooking a variety of popular menu items such as bagels, pizzas, frozen snacks, potatoes, and cookies. Other highlights include a 120-minute timer that shuts off automatically after the elapsed time, an audible bake and toast signal bell, a nonstick interior, upper and lower oven-rack positions, an "on" indicator light, and a glass door for viewing the cooking process at a glance. Accessories include a pizza pan, a baking pan, and a removable crumb tray. this is the second raclette purchased. first one, unanamed, too slow and food not crisp enough. this one, however, heats up fast, cooks the food crisp and is very roomy. bottom takes a small fry pan. have made veggie burger with english muffin, topped with coleslaw which came out great. also made veggie soy chicken cutlet dipped in egg white and coated with panko crumbs and italian seasoning. came out crisp and juicy. so it's great if you're into occasional meatless meals and wondering how to cook them so they don't taste too "nerdy" this is the way to go.

Sanyo HPS-SG3 200-Square-Inch Electric Indoor Barbeque Grill, Black Review

Sanyo HPS-SG3 200-Square-Inch Electric Indoor Barbeque Grill, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one appliance that lives up to every one of the manufacturer's claims. I follow directions and spray the grill surface with cooking spray and put half a cup of water in the pan below, and the grill really is, as advertised, smokeless and extremely easy to clean. I like the adjustable grill temperature, a feature I'm not used to since my faithful antique Farberware, now deceased, had only two settings, namely "plugged in and on" or "unplugged and off". The Sanyo cooks everying in half the time the old grill did, and without cabinet-endangering flareups. I particularly like the enormous cooking surface since I'm regularly cooking for 5 adults and a child and with this grill I can cook for all of us at once. The dimensions make it easy to store if you set it vertically rather than horizontally. The appliance is so low in height that I set mine on a silicone countertop protector, but I'm not sure this is really necessary. My only complaint is that there is no surrounding rim to keep your hamburgers from sliding right off the grill when you try to flip them over, but using a second spatula as a backstop solves that problem. This grill is a terrific bargain even at the suggested retail price; at the current Amazon price it's even more terrific.

With its extra-large 200-square-inch nonstick cooking surface, this indoor barbeque grill provides ample space for everyday use or entertaining year round. The grill features adjustable temperature control with an indicator light, and its powerful 1300-watt heating element is built into the bottom of the grill surface for even heat distribution. The grill not only sears those tasty grill marks onto food, but its design also keeps food above and away from grease, fat, and other excess liquids for healthier cooking. The removable drip pan catches run-off fat, and by filling it first with water, it's easy to enjoy virtually smoke-free grilling. The unit's cool-touch handles and base provide added safety, and its nonstick surface and dishwasher-safe drip pan make for quick and easy cleanup. A bilingual instruction manual and a recipe guide are included. The grill measures 23-5/8 by 3-7/8 by 14-1/2 inches.

These crocks were exactly what I was looking for and the price was right too! I wanted the type of onion soup crocks that restaurants use but could never seem to find the right color or the right size. These HIC crocks were the right size and color. I love them and my onion soup turns out beautifully in them. When the cheese drips down the sides, they look just like they do in the restaurants. I highly recommend this product.

Zojirushi CV-DSC40 VE Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer, Stainless Steel Review

Zojirushi CV-DSC40 VE Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer, Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a recently disabled adult that cannot get enough of a good cup of tea. So seeing this I thought it would make a nice birthday present for me, and make life a little easier around the kitchen. It performs as it says it will.
It looks bulky but is surprisingly lightweight and easy to handle. The whole unit spins on a lazy-susan device making it east to direct the steam vent away from kitchen surfaces.
You will need a water pitcher of some kind to fill this easily. I have a medium sized one sand simply filly the pitcher twice to fill this device once. The handle on top, removable lid, and notched corner makes emptying and cleaning a breeze.
The temperature features are splendid and accurate, there are three:
205 for noodles/ramen etc, herbal infusions, pu-er, Assam and some other black teas..
195 For Darjeeling or delicate blacks like Illam valley are at this temperature as well, let the water sit a few minutes in the brew pot befor adding tea leaves, if you have a very delicate tea.
175 for green or white teas. A few of the more delicate whites fill the tea pot first, then add the leaves. By filling your teapot dry first, this allows the water to lose 5-10F by just warming the pot. Often enough to make a better flavored tea.
On a given day I can go from pu-er tsocha right from boiling, and set the temp to 195. Make a pot of bold assam in the afternoon when at a full boil, then set the temp to 175. Now, after dinner it is set for making jasmine tea for dessert. All with a minimal energy usage and cost.
I have found it a good idea to refill it only 1-2 times then empty the remains, give it a brush inside with a towel, and then let it completely dry. My scale buildup was reduced quite a bit this way.
For a fully able person this unit -is- a bit of a luxury. A simple electric teapot with temperature control would do you just fine for a fraction of the initial cost. This will make cost up over time by the thermos nature though, just a fyi.
Have a chain tea drinker in your life though or thoughts for limited commercial use (like a small teahouse), or like tea but have a very full life and time schedule? This would make a great gift for you or even a small splurge to treat yourself.UPDATE:
Almost two years later and it not only looks fine but functions just as well as the day I got it. I have to descale it about every 9 months or so. Other than that it is pretty maintenance free. Talk about longer term bang for your buck. If you drink tea or would use boiling water on a daily basis, this is a staple for your kitchen.
Some other uses I found. When making soup, rice, thinning a sauce, or deglazing a pan fill your measuring device from the Zojirushi set in slow pour. I now use water from the boiler and the hot water not only speeds up the process, but some flavors are left alone because the room temp water would have cooled the dish and altered the flavors.
I have also found the steel finish wipes very easily. A friend who bought the white version has some staining that stubbornly persists to this day. All in all if you get one you will not be disappointed.
(small edits made above with input from trial and error over the period I've owned this boiler.)

The unit's stainless-steel double insulation wall keeps water hot with minimum electricity, while it Cafe Drip dispensing mode allows for slower dispensing. I have been looking for a double boiler. Of course I wanted one that was good quality, but not to pricey. I looked around where I live because I wanted to look at it, but we have really big ones. I was want to use it for candy and making frosting, so you see I just didn't need anything so big. This double boiler is top of the line in quality and the perfect size. I thought the price was a little more than I wanted to spend, but once I received it and used it. I decided it wasn't to high. It was perfect for my frosting and clean up was super easy. I highly recommend this pan. I will also be taking a look at some of Paula Dean's other cookware.

Lodge LCC3 Logic Pre-Seasoned Combo Cooker
Average Reviews:

if you are just outfitting your kitchen, start with this pan. Especially if you are cooking for 2 or 3. The 10" deep skillet is one of the least expensive, decent fry pans available. You can do a dutch apple pie with the lid on in the oven, you can cook eggs, pancakes, french toast on the lid. If you are cooking for 4, and want just one fry pan, get the 12". Otherwise this pan does it all. Roast, fry, oven and stove top. The pans are tough, mine is going on 20+ years.
Downside, takes a bit more oil or grease than a Teflon pan, but then if you own a parrot you already know you can't cook on Teflon. Makes you wonder how good it is for the rest of us.

Get two pieces of cookware in one package with this cast iron Combo Cooker from the Lodge Logic line. It features a 3-quart base that can act as a deep skillet or shallow Dutch oven and a shallow 10-1/4-inch skillet/griddle that also acts as a lid to the 3-quart base. Cast iron creates superior heat retention, heats evenly, and loves a campfire, unlike flimsier pans. The American-based company Lodge has been fine-tuning its construction of rugged, cast-iron cookware for more than a century. No other metal is as long-lasting and works as well for spreading and retaining heat evenly during cooking. Lodge's Logic line of cookware comes factory pre-seasoned with the company's vegetable oil formula, and is ready to use right out of the box.
While both come pre-seasoned to prevent food from sticking, they work best when sprayed or lightly coated with vegetable oil before use. After the meal is done, simply scrub the cast iron with a stiff brush and hot water, no soap, and dry immediately. OK, it toasts, so it works as advertised. But the fact that the toaster is almost entirely lightweight plastic - except for the heating cage and the crumb tray - gives this the feel of a disposable product. I get that toasters aren't going to last forever, but there is something to be said for having a solid build-quality with durable-feeling materials. If this baby should meet the floor, the floor is going to win - I mean, a geriatric hip has more strength than this. However, if you are going on a long hike and want to bring a toaster and not be weighed down by a heavy item, this is the toaster for you. I bought this online; if I had gotten my hands on it in person at a retail chain I would have opted for another model.

This is a quality countertop oven. It bakes with or without convection. The convection function is incredibly quiet. The racks don't fall out or down onto the burners when baking heavy dishes. Even with convection baking, it bakes bread without roasting the top crust. It's large inside with an efficient design that doesn't take up excessive counter space. You can turn it "ON" or use timer to control the turn-off. It's solid and tight construction--obvious quality to the sight or touch. It's only weak point that I have found is that it doesn't actually toast bread on both sides at once. It's superb for baking, roasting, broiling. Even comes with a cookie sheet!

Cons: Black on silver makes the dials hard to read, The three settings (bake, brown and toast) are not defined in the manual. First time burning off the chemicals on the elements is VERY smokey! Smelled like I was melting a GI Joe in the thing! Set off my smoke detector it did!
Conclusion: An excellent buy for the money! Keep an eye on it (use a seporate timer until you get used to it) I had a potpie that went from perfect to slightly burned in 30 seconds (set off my smoke detector again)

This "convection" toaster oven has a fan with all the power and focus of a 1 year old blowing out his birthday candle. Said fan is quite effective at rattling the flimsy (like the rest of the toaster) crumb tray, resulting in a quite annoying and loud rattle anytime the unit is set to convection. The fan also happens to blow directly along where there are no heating elements, thus what little air it manages to blow in from outside serves quite effectively to not heat whatever you're trying to heat. I guess they didn't bother to hire an engineer in designing this thing as to be effective at convecting, the fan really needed to blow across a heated element to then blow hot air over the food. C'mon guys, I hear there are unemployed engineers looking for jobs, you couldn't find one?
What is good about it is that the inside is aluminum, which is better than if it were a teflon coated material from a health standpoint. Why didn't they make the inside stainless? Probably the same reason they had it built in China from the thinnest gauge sheet they could get away with, it's cheaper.
This is the first item I've ever returned to Amazon, it was that bad.
Why did I give it two stars? Because it heats things so I guess it fulfills its basic functionality. It is also not ugly so I guess if you want an appliance that you don't need to use or are just dressing a set for a commercial or something, this would be a good prop.
To be fair, the part below applies to most toasters of this type:
It, like many others in its class also only has two heating rods beneath the food thus if you are trying to toast bread you will end up with bread toasted on the edges and only marginally so in the middle. Continuing with the bread, because of the wide separation between the upper heating elements and the bread, your bread will likely burn on the bottom and be slightly golden on the top. Thus if you want to toast bread evenly, you will need to babysit it and turn it over by hand a number of times during the toasting process, good luck doing this without burning your hand.
