(More customer reviews)I bought the Krona 1 1/2 quart double boiler because I needed a double boiler and I needed a small pot. Unfortunately this purchase was a big disappointment. While the bottom has the 18/10 stainless steel construction, the first food I prepared in it left its mark and I have not been able to remove them. (No, I did not burn the food nor cook on too high a heat). That aside, I can live with the bottom pot. The top one however, the double boiler part, is thin/very light and cheap feeling. Plus the pot has a conical shaped bottom which means you can't sit it down. How useless! If I had known, these latter two features would have been enough for me to have passed on this double boiler.

Fagor Stainless-Steel 2-Quart Double Boiler with Steamer Insert Review

(More customer reviews)This is a well-made, versatile, attractive, almost-"professional" set which, if you look around for sales, offers a good deal for the money (mine was from Macey's, special $39.95).
Although the bottom unit is heavy enough to function nicely as an independant 3 qt. stockpot, the top unit should definitely not be used over direct heat (my only complaint). And I think the well-made glass lid is always a plus over a solid one.
The upper unit and steamer both have 2 qt. capacities. This size is about right for all "double boiling" or for steamimng moderate amounts of food, but might be a little small if you want to steam vegetables, etc. for more than 2 to 3 people on a regular basis.

All-Clad Stainless 3-Quart Double-Boiler Insert Review

(More customer reviews)This is a wonderful double boiler insert with one minor exception. The ring that keeps it from falling into the pan with the water in it catches the food/sauce and therefore is harder to clean and mix. Now having said that, I still love this pan, I just wish the inside was totally smooth. I use it to make chocolate candies/truffles and the stuff melts up perfectly. Controlling the temperature is key when melting chocolate and with stainless steel its easy. I really should own two of these pans but kitchen space is limited.
(fits the non loop 3/4 qt sauce pans perfectly, The 4qt sauce pan with loop it doesn't seat well, as the loop lifts the edge allowing steam to escape.)

The keys are that the insert is not in the water and that it is made of heavy porcelain which is gentle on the sauce. No more mediocre bearnaise in this house! An added bonus is that it looks great.

MDB-1 Double Boiler Review

(More customer reviews)This little boiler is great for when you need small sizes. My use involves not using the lid, but the fact that the lid is glass helps so I can see what's going on when the pan is covered. The seal of the top pan onto the bottom pan is firm but not too tight so that some steam can escape. I bought this pan to make homemade clotted cream and it is perfect for that because the small size increases the density of the cream layer. It's exactly what I would recommend if you are interested in the art of clotted cream. The top pan does not sit upright when empty and sitting on a flat surface (the handle is too heavy) but that's the only imperfection and it's easy to get around (once you put anything in it, it stays upright). Easily washed in the dishwasher. Recommended!

I looked around where I live because I wanted to look at it, but we have really big ones. I was want to use it for candy and making frosting, so you see I just didn't need anything so big. This double boiler is top of the line in quality and the perfect size. I thought the price was a little more than I wanted to spend, but once I received it and used it. I decided it wasn't to high. It was perfect for my frosting and clean up was super easy. I highly recommend this pan. I will also be taking a look at some of Paula Dean's other cookware.

Considered sending it back for that reason--Primarily I just want it to reheat single-serving meals (and NOT use a microwave). But then I thought it's not a bad idea to be able to use it for larger servings. I love it. The curved bottom is nice, it's easy to clean and pretty and shiny enough that I hung it in the kitchen.(Which works better than on a shelf as the curved bottom naturally keeps it from staying upright--the photo is deceiving in that regard). Definitely recommend this and all Cuisinart pots & pans.

I have no complaints about the double boiler (which rests comfortably in a variety of Cuisinart pots, and possibly others.) It works great, has a generous capacity and comfortable handle, and cleans up like a dream.
That said, it's really easy to make your own double boiler at home, using a heavy sauce pan plus a durable glass or steel mixing bowl that rests comfortably on top, never touching the boiling water underneath. If you have all of this equipment, you probably don't need to purchase this piece. If you decide you want a dedicated double boiler, then this is a fine choice.

My method was clumsy and the process was more like steaming that double-boiling. Since I had different quantities to cook, it was tough to find a double boiler that would fit my different needs and I didn't want to buy several double-boilers.
Then I came across this nice little item and thought that for this price, I couldn't go wrong. Well, I was right for once.
This insert is so practical and beyond versatile!
It holds a variety of things in varying volumes while sitting sturdily in a host of pots. The dome shape allows you to whip up even a small amount of sauce without the ingredients being "lost" as a thin layer on the bottom of a big pot. It cuts down the double-boiling process by more than two-fold. The nice little measurement guidelines help ensure that you are using the right quantity. It is non-stick and cleans without having to scrub. Plus, it hardly takes up any space since it nests nicely in existing pots for storage.
