I'm not sure how this oven performs. As I din't own it long enough to know. (My friends with a bunch of kids have a toaster/oven/broiler that they've been using for years! At least ten. Don't know what their brand is, but it's definitely not this one.)
That was my second time using this oven... (sigh...)
The first time I toasted bread. It came out crisp and perfect.
The second time I was baking potatoes. At some point I opened the door to check how done they were, and from that moment on, the door wouldn't close. There is a part that is supposed to keep it tightly shut, and my guess is that that part gave way. Broke. Now there's a 1/2 an inch gap*. The door opens horizontally towards the bottom. So the gap is in the top where all the hot air rises. That is kind of annoying since all the heat escapes and the oven stops being an oven :-(
It was a uncalled gift, so I'm not THAT upset. But I just built a shelf for it, and my wife was really looking forward to grill toasts with cheese in it. And it happened on the SECOND use!!!
I will do a thorough research before buying any Proctor Silex item in the future!* I could probably place a heavy object against the door and it will keep it shut, but
1) the oven is located on a shelf and there's no place to put anything in front of it, and
2) Can You imagine yourself buying something so defective that you need to "help" it to function?

UPDATE: March.18.2011
I have fixed the door problem. I have opened the casing with a screw driver, and twisted and bent the spring that keeps the door closed. I guess it's metal dilated a bit because of the heat... Since then It's been working perfectly.
The timer allows you to set it to 15 min auto shutoff. Or its possible to use it without timer. and both will allow to run it on the oven or toaster cycle.
All in all, I'll give it 3.5 stars because:
- It shouldn't have required my input to fix it in the first place
- It's not that large inside, after all. And while the area allows you to put 4 slices of square toasts, the height isn't great enough to bake all you want.
Will try to update again after some time.
